Scientific workshop “Microfinance and opportunities of economic development for women”

On 26/01/2018, Ms. Duong Thi Ngoc Linh – Member of the VWU’s Presidium cum TYM’s General Director and Ms. Tran Thi Huong – member of TYM Soc Son branch attended the national scientific workshop “Microfinance and economic development opportunities for women” in Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province. .

the role of individuals especially women in family economic development as well as the link between this and the microfinance industry development strategy and the comprehensive financial development strategy of Vietnam.

As a representative for the microfinance institutions which has been actively supporting women in economic development, Ms. Duong Thi Ngoc Linh, Member of the VWU’s Presidium cum TYM’s General Director was invited to speak at the workshop. Ms. Linh mentioned the direction of the Central Vietnam Women’s Union in the orientation of supporting women in economic development. She also shared TYM’s performance during its 26 years of operation, especially, emphasized a wide range of social activities to support comprehensively its members in economic development. Ms. Tran Thi Huong – TYM’s member in Phu Minh commune, Soc Son district, Hanoi city, representing more than 140,000 other members, confidently shared the impact of TYM on her family’s development. From a poor family (she did farming and her husband traveled here and there to sell ice cream), to date, both of them have had stable jobs; their family own a farm of 1,500 m2; and their elder son graduated from Hanoi University of Technology. Being prideful of the efforts and achievements of the family, she also realized that these have come largely thanks to TYM’s support. She shared that she would stay with TYM for further development.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Pham Xuan Hoe – Deputy Director of Institute of Banking Strategy – State Bank of Vietnam highly appreciated the results that TYM has achieved over the years. He expressed his admiration for Ms. Duong Thi Tuyet – TYM’s member in Nam Dinh province who borrowed the first loan of only VND 300,000 from TYM to buy scrap iron 20 years earlier and has now become an entrepreneur managing a big bronzing workshop and created stable jobs for more than 20 local people. He was impressed with the programs of training and supporting members to sell products and develop their family business chain in a comprehensive way.

The workshop reaffirmed the contribution of microfinance to poverty reduction, economic development of the country and to women’s empowerment. It is hoped that the discussion received at the workshop would be the basis for the State Bank of Vietnam to provide more guidance and solutions for the development of the microfinance industry in the coming time, contributing to the comprehensive development of finance in Vietnam.
